A Tale of Two Commencements: For Barack Obama, life is politics. For Mitt Romney, life includes politics; politics, he said, does not define us. To wage a presidential campaign in our nonstop media age, the man who sees politics as a battering ram may have an edge. But Mitt Romney, with his politics of optimism and personal conscience, could be onto something that will serve him well.
Obama’s inevitable shellacking: Just about every objective indicator foreshadows a huge re-election defeat for President Obama. With every day that passes, Mr. Obama looks more like a loser. That’s because there is doom and gloom everywhere you look. When government mathematical fudging is stripped away, unemployment is stuck over 10 percent. Economic growth is practically nonexistent and promises to slide downhill even more in the coming months with Europe and its banks rapidly collapsing. Due to Mr. Obama’s out-of-control deficit spending, the national debt is at a heart-stopping $15.7 trillion, which erases a whole year of economic output by our entire country. With the Supreme Court poised to strike down Obamacare, his only signature legislative achievement, the president will have nothing to show for four years in office other than record misery.
This is why we resist the coercive secularization implied in some laws that repress Christian activity in public places. It is not that we want to establish Christianity as the law of the land. That is intrinsically impossible, because of the spiritual nature of the kingdom. It is rather because repression of free exercise of religion and persuasion is as wrong against Christians as it is against secularists. We believe this tolerance is rooted in the very nature of the gospel of Christ. In one sense, tolerance is pragmatic: freedom and democracy seem to be the best political order humans have conceived. But for Christians it is not purely pragmatic: the spiritual, relational nature of God's kingdom is the ground of our endorsement of pluralism, until Christ comes with rights and authority that we do not have.
Finally, an analysis of the North Carolina Marriage Amendment vote indicates that even if no one over 45 had voted Tuesday, the amendment would still have passed by an 8% margin. Advocates of same-sex marriage, often use faulty poll data to insist that a "majority of Americans" favor same sex marriage. But the actual votes in the voters booths, where people have had an opportunity to officially express their opinion, shows something far different (in 32 states, a strong majority, an average of 2/3 of the voters, have voted for one-man, one-woman marriage).
