Who says that a conservative Republican can’t win the black vote? It looks like Rick Santorum’s choice to make Reverend O’Neal Dozier the honorary chairman of his Florida Campaign is already paying huge dividends. Dozier, the former NFL football player turned pastor, endorsed Santorum from his pulpit on Sunday. Rev. Dozier warmly introduced Senator Santorum, saying that ”Obama has been very bad for our Black community”, and that ”Rick Santorum is a man of honor and the choice to beat Obama in November.”
Santorum took the stage at the Worldwide Christian Center and quickly struck a cord with the mostly Black congregation. Santorum said ”People call me the values candidate, but I firmly believe family values are an economic issue. Rick then pointed out that ”over 40% of single parent homes in the black community are under the poverty line. That needs to be changed. And strengthening the family unit is the best way to lift these families out of poverty.”
Senator Santorum then discussed the strategic importance of standing with Israel, calling them ”our loyal ally and our best friend in the Middle East.” You could see the church-goers heads nodding up and down in approval at that statement.
Rick also spoke about his battle to ban partial birth abortion, also known as ”infantcide”. For those of you unaware of what this gruesome practice is: A live baby comes out of the mother womb. legs first, everything except the head. The doctor then crushes the head of the baby and removes the now dead baby from the mother’s womb and disposes of it.
Senator Santorum introduced the ”Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003″ into legislation and devoted all of his political capital into getting this crucial piece of legislation passed. Rick finally succeeded in getting this bill passed, but at a high personal cost. He was now ”public enemy number one” of the far left and the liberal media, and they took their revenge on him by helping Bob Casey Jr, the son of former popular Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey, defeat Santorum for his Senate seat in 2006.
Then came the most touching moment of the day. As well as one who serves as an ominous warning for the danger that Obamacare presents to our country. Rick spoke about his 3 year old disabled daughter Bella. Bella was born with a rare genetic disorder called trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome). Doctors and health care providers said that she would be emotionally and physically disabled and openly suggested that it was a poor allotment of ”time and medical resources” to try to keep her alive. But Rick instead chose to embrace Bella as a valued and important member of the Santorum family. And Rick shared from the heart about the lessons that his family learned from Bella; that everyone is disabled in one way or another, and the value of unconditonal love.
Rick Santorum received a standing ovation as he walked off the stage.
